Gertrude is the Queen of Denmark, and being royal comes with great expectations. Gertrude's son Hamlet believes that she is not acting in a royal manner when she hastily married her deceased husbands brother, which he demonstrates in his ironic remarks towards her that "it is common" to die, while really his sarcasm shows that he believes its lowly of her to remarry so quickly (I.ii.73). Upon discovering that it was her now husband that killed her past husband, Gertrude is shocked. This causes further conflict, as her marriage is now questionable yet she cannot go back on her decisions because to annul a marriage at that time period.
Gertrude remains loyal to both her husband Claudius and Hamlet, which is difficult as they are opposites. This causes internal turmoil.

In this scene, Hamlet blatantly states his position on the matter of Gertrude's love life.

Claudius' thoughts on Gertrude's relationship with him are quite different. He e star moves not but in his sphere, I enjoys his relationship with the Queen, saying "She's so conjunctive to my life and soul, That, as the star moves not but in his sphere, I could not but by her." (IV.vii.14-6)
He sees nothing wrong with the marriage as it is the marriage that elevated his status in the manner Hamlet does. |
