Throughout the novel, noone asks Ophelia what she would like to do, instead opting to speak for her. After the death of her father and loss of her love, Ophelia finally has the opportunity to speak for herself but without previous support to speak as she likes, her internal turmoil drives her over the edge into insanity. She dies by questionable means in Act 4, Scene 7. It's disputed whether she killed herself or fell into a river that caused her death.
